Krajina abstraktne umetnosti

THE HOT SUMMER

Landscape of abstract art

Picture 1: The Hot Summer (Source: Zbirka Likovnega salona Kočevje)

The work of art was painted by the Slovenian artist and forester Janez Černač in 1972. It’s painted in a technique called pastel and its dimensions are 36 x 61 cm. It’s an example of Abstract art and is a part of the collection at the art gallery Likovni salon Kočevje.

To depict his experience of nature in summer, the artist played  with different colours in an abstract way while painting the picture. He showed spaciousness of the landscape with a lot of different strokes, windings and lines. They created an impression of different shapes, because of which we can see, that the painting is not entirely  abstract. Despite the fact that every individual experiences the artwork in their own way, we can’t avoid the shape of the landscape that puts grassland strips in the foreground, forests to the side and mountains in the background.

The artist didn’t only show the landscape, but even depicted its temperature, with which he presented the season. For the impression of warmth or heat he used warm colours:  mostly red and less so yellow and orange. He showed the contrast to warmth with cold colours, predominantly blue, and partly with black and dark green. The perspective is colour-based, because the artist took advantage of different refraction of light waves in the eye lens to create an impression of distant colours. If two colours (warm and cold) are equally distant from us, this phenomenon makes the cool colour appear further away from us than the warm one.  In addition to perspective he also used the diagonal composition  in which the coloured lines are formed into a kind of circle or spiral. The iconographic theme of the artwork is secular and its motif is showing nature in the hot summer time, therefore showing the landscape.

Janez Černač was born in 1937 in Gorenja vas near Trebnje. By profession he is a forest ingeneer, which is why he was an employee at the forest management company Gozdno gospodarstvo Kočevje from 1964 to 1994. Now he is retired and dedicates his time to hunting. He is a photography enthusiast and writer whose  works critisize social and political conditions of Slovenian forests. He is one of the few who thinks out loud  about the past, the present and the future of  the Kočevsko region and other areas. He liked to pour out his love for nature on canvas. He created a lot of interesting artworks, with which he attended many group exhibitions in the art gallery Likovni salon Kočevje, among them the exhibition Misel in korenine (Thought and Roots) in 1995 and the exhibition Zbirke Likovnega salona Kočevje in 2009 and 2010. His way of expressing his emotions through nature and its images with the help of colours had a big influence on the creation of the presented painting.

I think that through the artwork the artist depicted and presented his feelings at the moment of painting very well. In it he also expressed his love for nature that characterises his whole life. I like how he abstractly presented the painting, but we can still see images of nature and summer impressions that he wanted to expose. The artwork evokes my summer memories and feelings of warm sun rays that bring feelings of happiness and freedom.
