The Tschinkl Villa
Art nouveau historic villa
The Tschinkl Villa was built in 1908 on Kolodvorska ulica street in Kočevje next to the neighbouring Sajovic Villa and is one of the art nouveau historic villas in Kočevje. Its build and the development of this style in Kočevje were stimulated by the construction of a new folk school in 1893.
Art nouveau was a movement of young painters and architects who separated from traditional artistic styles in the last years of the 19th century. In Slovenia, mostly the art nouveau style from Vienna was present, first in Ljubljana and then it spread all over Slovenia. Most art nouveau buildings in Slovenia were constructed between 1901 and 1909.
Noticable features of the period are: the choice of yellow, blue-green and brown colours, the use of different materials (glass and wood surfaces), the vegetal floral decoration and the airiness visible in the large number of windows.

The building is tall and spacious, it has a wooden porch, which reaches from the ground floor to the roof. On the right side of the villa there is a brick extension in the shape of a half of an octagon, which extends to the 1st floor and ends with the balustrade. In the past the building functioned as a general store, which later became the first bicycle shop in Kočevje. After World War II an extension was added on the east side of the villa, which was known as »Miličarska«. Today the building is residential.

In my opinion the building is very significant for Kočevje, because it represents the presence of art nouveau in the area. The Tschinkl Villa is very interesting, I especially like the wooden part, which gives the building a special charm. The plant decoration makes the villa more natural and the extension differentiates from the rest. The building would be more noticeble, modern and elegant, if the whole villa and the extension were painted with the same colour and some art nouveau patterns were added to the extension, like the ones visible by the windows. Now I look upon the villa as an important art nouveau building, which is considered the first bicycle shop in Kočevje.
