Abstraktna ponazoritev spomina

Temno in hladno obarvane vijuge v ozadju dajejo občutek zmedenosti in stresa.

(I FEEL COLOURS IN MY MEMORY)

An abstract depiction of memory

Picture 1: V spominu čutim barve (I Feel Colours in My Memory) (Source: https://museums.eu/collection/object/280932/v-spominu-cutim-barve)

The painting, titled V spominu čutim barve (I Feel Colours in My Memory), was painted in 1987 by a Slovenian artist and sportswoman Milena Usenik. The painting was painted in the technique oil on canvas. It is classified as an abstract work of art and it measures 130 cm in height and 180 cm in width. Today the painting is kept in the Miklova hiša art gallery in Ribnica.

Various shades of blue and yellow are used in the painting but we can also find different shades of red, orange and brown. Cool colours (blue and green) can be spotted in the background on the edge of the painting, while warm colours (yellow, red, orange and brown) are collected more in the foreground and resemble a sort of human shape that floats in the blue space. The painting portrays a secular iconographic theme and depicts a fantastical or a surrealist motif. It illustrates a fine arts representation of the artist’s imagination. In my opinion, the painting conveys that we can always look back to pleasant past memories and see colours in the darkness that surrounds us when we are sad in our present.

The painting seems three-dimensional because of the use of dark and cool colours in the background in contrast with warm and light colours in the foreground. Based on this we can see that the painting uses a colour perspective to create a sense of depth (cool colours in the background, warm colours in the foreground). The composition is diagonal due to the diagonal line that runs through the yellow formation from one corner of the painting to the other. We can also sense a sort of lighting effect. The yellow, light formation in the foreground looks like it’s glowing next to the dark, blue base. The texture of dry paint in the painting is a bit rough and the brush strokes are noticeable due to the artist’s applying thick layers of paint.

Milena Usenik, born in Veliki Vrh na Blokah on November 9, 1934, decided to pursue abstract art because she was interested in the formation of an individual`s expression through art. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana in 1965, but pursued a postgraduate degree which she finished in 1968. Today she resides and creates in Logatec and Ljubljana as a freelance artist. Some of her paintings are exhibited in the Miklova hiša art gallery in Ribnica. Her paintings have numerous times been the subject of many critics’ studies. The so-called »flexible fine arts structure« is characteristic of many of her works. She uses colour as her main form of self-expression. Marjan Tršar labeled her  arabesques as ˝wild art nouveau˝ because of the pulsating colour contrasts and less controlled thick brush strokes. This talented abstract artist is the winner of the Richard Jakopič Award for her life`s work and inspires many artists.

I really like the painting V spominu čutim barve (I Feel Colours in My Memory) because of the unique choice of colours that the artist used in her work. Blue and orange, which are the dominant colours in the painting, are complementary colours that are known to draw attention when used together. The dark and cool undulating shapes in the background create a feeling of stress and confusion, while the warm and light formations in the foreground allude to a positive attitude that each one of us must have in stressful situations, even if that means we have to look back to past memories to find it. But what I like most about the painting is the message that the artist tried to convey. I also often sink in beautiful childhood memories when I feel sad or any other negative emotion.
