VISOKOTEHNOLOŠKA ARHITEKTURA V KOČEVJU

HIGH-TECHNOLOGY ARCHITECTURE

We can find the bank Ljubljanska banka at Trg zbora odposlancev 66 in Kočevje. It was built in the 1970’s, more precisely  between 1976 and 1978. The plans were designed by Miloš Bonča. In the 1980’s (1986-1988) it was redesigned in the international high-technology modern style according to the plans of the same arhitect.

Already at first sight the building stands out from its surroudings and its image combines characteristics of high-technology architecture. Its shape reminds of a technological device, some kind of machine, redesigned into architecture.

Basically, it was isnpired by buildings in Ljubljana of that time and represents a similar architectural expression to other creations by Miloš Bonča, for example, the department store in Šiška and the bank Ljubljanska banka in Mozirje, Celje and Ljubljana. The trapezium building with one terraced side has four floors and a groundfloor, a flight of stairs at the side leading to the roof, diagonally tilted chimney and a completely flat roof, which distignuishes it from other buildings in Kočevje. The building doesn’t obscure its structure and construction, which means that certain functional elements, such as the chimney and the fire escape, stand out from its structural body and they aren’t hidden under the façade cover. The entrance is accentuated with a canopy and a prominent triangular pier.

The bank is a public institution, whose function is banking, however, safety is also important. From outside, that is the road side, the building is completely closed, which symbolically represents an armour, which supposedly protects workers from the outside world and offers safety to people coming into this building. The opposite side of the building, which is not facing the road, is all in glass, so that workers and customers can have contact with nature.

The bank Ljubljanska banka isn’t the only building in Kočevje built in high-technology architecture style. Already 10 years before its contruction the department store Nama was built only a stone’s throw away and it clearly shows charecteristics of high-technology architecture. These two buildings are in constant dialogue, because they are only separated by the main road.

Due to its function the bank is part of the everyday life of every human being and has an important role in our lives. At the same time it also symbolizes the power of capital, without which, unfortunately, we can’t imagine the modern society.
