RAZBURKANO MORJE

TUMULTUOS SEA (Razburkano morje)
Painting on the canvas
Želko Vertelj has painted numerous masterpieces during his almost 30-year career. One of them is a painting titled “Tumultuous Sea” (Slovene: “Razburkano morje”). The illustration was created about 10 years ago with oil paint on canvas, measuring 50 x 40 centimetres. It is currently kept in his studio.
The composition is a realistic depiction of nature representing a view of the clamorous sea and a floating ship at sunset. The lower left half of the illustration shows a mass of rocks descending into the sea and battered by sea waves. The foreground emphasises the rough sea with the representation of sea waves and sparkling water, while the sea gradually calms down in the distance. Towards the right portion of the sea surface, in front of the merging coastline, glides a sailboat; its clear boundary lines are fuzzy because it is so far away. Depicted in the upper section of the painting are clouds, illuminated by the sun as it is slowly setting.
The painting is an excellent example of a seascape; it faithfully replicates and depicts nature. The space in the illustration is defined by the light emitted by the sun coming from behind the clouds. Its rays leak out of the clouds and are reflected on the water surface. To make the space even more realistic, the artist has applied the principle that the size of objects and shapes decreases with distance. The painting with “its green and white-blue tones of grey silvers brings an untameable power, the palpable sound and roar of parted waves, the coolness, the spray of the sea, the smell of seaweed and salt” (Racman 2017), while the golden yellow hues of the sun in the composition illustrate light.
The author of the painting Željko Vertelj, born on 26 July 1959, is one of the Slovenian painters who paint with mouth or feet. He was already attracted to drawing as a child, but from childhood onwards there was not much time for the hobby. When he became a paraplegic in 1993 due to a car accident, he had a lot of time on his hands; he returned to his artistic creating, but this time more professionally. He did not take his disability as an obstacle and did not give up. Today, he draws and paints mostly with his mouth and depicts stunning images of nature. In his work he collaborates with many local artists and painters from the Fine Arts Section of the Slovenian Paraplegics Association.
The “Tumultuous Sea” painting, like most of Vertelj’s works, belongs to contemporary art with a touch of realism. The illustration is modelled upon motifs and phenomena from the natural world. With this work—and many others—the artist wanted to present and show that which is invisible to people in the everyday rhythm of life and remains increasingly hidden. From the artist’s intimate impressions in the painting, we can observe how he understands nature through his own eyes. The painting invites us to rest and escape from reality and to relive the author’s memories. The artist and his work have been influenced by group workshops and numerous mentors, including Rajko Čauševič (Rassó Causevig). Vertelj has this to say about his painting: “From my room at home, I can see the emerald Kočevje Horn with its surroundings, which is an eternal source of inspiration. From there, I am fed by motifs with accentuated lines of untouched nature.”
I was initially attracted to the painting because of its motifs of nature and the sea. It made me focus on the colours, and I discovered a deeper meaning of the painting. As I explored the artist and his work, I realised that we can find peace in paintings and escape from reality to a place where we can rest our minds in our own way. I learnt that no reason is good enough to give up on something you love and do, just as Vertelj did not give up because of his physical limitations. Even today, he continues to create for himself, for his soul, and for us.
