Umetnikova ljubezen do abstraktne umetnosti

Slika 1: Abstrakcija (Vir: Zbirka Likovnega salona Kočevje)

Zanjo so značilni prostorski žepi.

Svetloba, barva in likovni prostor so trije temeljni povezovalni elementi njegovih del.

ABSTRAKCIJA

ABSTRACTION

The artist´s love for abstract art

Picture 1: Abstrakcija (Abstraction) (Source: Zbirka Likovnega salona Kočevje)

The painting Abstrakcija (Abstraction), was painted in 1973 by a Slovenian educator, graphic designer and painter Henrik Marchel. The painting was painted in the technique oil on canvas. It is classified as an abstract work of art and it measures 100 cm in height and 85 cm in width. Today the painting is part of the collection of the art gallery Likovni salon Kočevje.

Yellow, beige and white are the most prominent colours in the painting. We can also notice two different shades of green, purple, dark blue, black and a narrow wavy line of red. All of the colours in the painting are collected in different curves and clouds, which give an impression of movement or flowing on the white background. The painting portrays a secular iconographic theme and depicts an imaginary or a surrealist motif because it illustrates a fine arts representation of the artist’s imagination. The associations and motifs on the painting are very hard to determine as the painting is deliberately illogical, which is characteristic for abstract works of art. That is also the reason why it is hard to make out the meaning of the painting. But we can imagine that the artist was trying to depict his love for abstract art or stir our imagination through the painting.

The painting seems three-dimensional because of the use of dark and light colours on the »colourless« white background. Dark colours, like black for example, seem closer to the viewer of the painting since they stand out more than light colours on the light (white) background. The skewed shapes are depicted from many different angles at the same time (wavy lines don´t have a specific direction so we can imagine that they originate from different angles and move in different directions), which is typical of polyperspectivity. Spatial pockets are one of its characteristics. We can notice a scattered or diffuse composition. The painting has many centres that we can channel our gaze into. We can not sense a prevailing lighting effect. The artist created the so called composition centres with rhythmically arranged brush strokes. Because of all of that we get the feeling that the artist meticulously planned the painting out, even though it seems unintentional at first.

Henrik Marchel was born in Otoče in the Gorenjska region on November 9, 1929. His path into abstract art was entirely logical, bound to gradual stylisation of the visual world and abandonment of descriptive depiction. After finishing arts and crafts school he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, which he graduated from in 1959. He acquired the status of a freelance artist in 1971, he moved closer to »new ornamentation« with a cycle of paintings from the 1970s. Some of his works are part of the collection of the art gallery Likovni salon Kočevje. He died in Kranj on July 11, 2014.  Imitation of nature wasn´t enough for him. He thought that paintings have to contain something more, which is why he is categorized as an abstract expressionist. His paintings express his internal experince and mood, which is also noticeable in the chosen painting, which is a depiction of the artist´s view of abstract art. Light, colour and space are the three key connective elements of his work. He is remembered as an original and virtuosic fine artist in the contemporary Slovenian art. His work was displayed in numerous exhibitions. Marchel recieved many awards and acknowledgments for his paintings, among them also Prešeren´s Award of the Gorenjska region in 1964. His artwork inspires Slovenian artists to this day.

I really like the painting Abstrakcija (Abstraction) because of its colour choice. Yellow, which is one of the dominant colours in the painting, is actually my favourite colour. Additionally, the artist used many different colour contrasts  which are known to draw attention. I enjoy abstract art because I like to first look at the painting with my own eyes and then read what the artist was trying to convey. Since I like paintings with deeper meanings, the fact that this painting doesn´t have one attracted me to it as well. I think it is interesting that I can just look at the painting and ask myself, what this painting is trying to say, without an already set deeper meaning. Therefore the meaning of the painting for me is an escape from the real world, which an artist feels when they`re creating. We can percieve the curvy shapes as some sort of colourful clouds that represent freedom.
