STAVBA V NOVORENESANČNEM SLOGU Z MODERNIM PRIZIDKOM

Leta 1909 so ob obnovitvi stavbi dogradili prizidek.

Leta 2002 so jo temeljito prenovili in dogradili prizidek. Gradnja prizidka in prenova sta potekali po načrtih arhitekta Branka Čepića.

THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL GIMNAZIJA KOČEVJE

A NEW RENAISSANCE STYLE BUILDING WITH A MODERN EXTENSION

The grammar school building in Kočevje is considered one of the most important monuments of historical style of the 19. century in Kočevje. It has gone through a lot of changes, however most of the time it was used for education. The building is located close to the centre of the city Kočevje on Ljubljanska cesta street.

It was built in Neo-Renaissance style between the years 1872 and 1874. The building of the grammar school was first recommended by dr. K. J. Schroer and it started to function as a school in the school year 1874/75. During the renovation in 1909 an extension was added to the building. The building originally had a Neo-Renaissance exterior with a rusticated ground floor. When it was renovated after World War II, it got ˝an unimaginative exterior with distinct colour stripes.˝ (Bernik, 1969: 42). The grammar school building is of light yellow, beige colours, of perpendicular shape with a gable tile roof and a brick façade.

In 2002 it was thoroughly renovated and an extension was added. The renovation and the building of the extension were carried out by the  architect Branko Čepić. The building returned to its original look and once again got a Neo-Renaissance exterior. The architect developed a surrogate glass façade membrane on the modern extension, which means that the base of the façade is aluminium fronts covered with blue-grey glass made of artificial mass. The passage between the old and new part of the school is red.

With the changing exterior the function of the building also changed. It was established as a German lower grammar school and later functioned as a German higher grammar school between the years 1907 and 1911. The Slovenian language was enforced in school after the year 1919. The building experienced a lot of historical and school changes and it was used for many different purposes, especially during World War II. In that time it served as headquarters for the Italian army. After 1980 it hosted a music school and the rooms were used for different free time activities. The grammar school operated at a different location until the renovation because the building was in very bad shape.

What I like about the grammar school building is the connection between the Neo-Renaissance style of the main part and the modern style of the extension. It is a beautiful intertwinement of the past and the present and is in my opinion a good example of the blend of double architecture. Although the main part and the extension are not in accordance in colours and in style, they connect together as a whole, a school where young people get knowledge for further studies and life.
