Danes živi v Kočevski Reki, kjer nadaljuje delo s slikarstvom, instalacijami in projekti.

Avto-portret, Popotnica in slika - Prihodnost pripada pogumnim.

Creations of socially engaged artist Aprilija Lužar

Aprilija Lužar is a modern, multimedia, feminist artist, who uses a wide range of aesthetics and techniques in her art and projects, which she complements with the position of women in our society, relevant and social themes, and activism.

She was born in 1963 in Ljubljana with her original name Majda. Her artistic path began in her early childhood. In 1976, she had her first exhibition in Domžale with the title Portreti (Portraits) in the gallery Galerija Veronika. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo and Ljubljana, where she graduated in 1987. She is currently living in Kočevska Reka, where she continues to create paintings, installations and projects.

Her art style consists of portrait Realism, abstractions in modern style, video and audio based projects, installations and performances. Feminist art with a wide range of aesthetics and relevant, social motifs, such as the position of women in the modern society, abuse of women and activism of the LGBTQ+ community are central to her work.

Ženski Taxi (1997), one of her most recognised and popular art projects, is part of her mobile arts. She carried out the project in 1997 right after she passed her driving test. She drove around Ljubljana in a black Ford, with a sign on the roof that said ¨ŽENSKI TAXI – rape free zone¨, which enabled her not only the courage and safety, but also a feeling of a mobile painting. This particular project gave her an opportunity to share her own story of abuse and provide a free and safe transport for women of Ljubljana and a space for them to talk about their abuse stories anonymously. The taxi was basically a mobile confessional, where Aprilija Lužar could work as a therapist with a professional counsellor. With this project she fought against sexism, homophobia and the inborn women’s shame of sexuality, masturbation and expression overall. She wanted to emphasize that sexual assault and other kinds of abuse were not personal problems but rather a social problem which needs to be tackled. With this project Aprilija Lužar won the international competition called V-DAY-STOP RAPE CONTEST in New York in 2002. The competition encouraged and supported innovative and new strategies of fighting against all kinds of abuse of women. This competition, which was founded by Eva Ensler, gave Aprilija Lužar international recognition. This project alone inspired other artists all over the world.

Other known artworks and art projects are: MASTERBACIJA (Masterbation), which depicts women masturbating and includes videotapes of naked female bodies. The painting Boginja Bakhus (Goddess Bakhus) in oil on canvas, a self-portrait, the painting Popotnica (Traveller) and the painting Prihodnost pripada pogumnim (The future belongs to the brave).

Aprilija Lužar doesn’t impress me only because of her talent for painting and her innovative ideas that she incorporates in her paintings, projects and performances, but also because of her attitude to the world and people as individuals in society. Her fight for equality is very brave and rare, especially in our small country, where every “abnormality” is often judged.
