V hišo vodijo s preprostimi reliefi okrašena vhodna vrata z veliko kljuko in profiliranim nadstreškom.

V pritličnih prostorih so imeli pekarno in gostilno.

Stavba s svojo rumenkasto zunanjostjo in belimi okni daje toplino, lep sijaj in s tem privablja Ribničane.

MIKLOVA HIŠA (The House of Miklovi)

THE CENTRE OF RIBNICA

Miklova hiša got its current look in 1991. This big single-storey building with a cellar, was built on rocky ground in the 19th century. Most likely, its architect was an Italian named Antonio Frucco, but most of the construction was done by its first owner Anton Arko of the family Miklovi.

The corner building is located in the main street of Ribnica. Its facade is yellowish, it has white windows and doors and also contains some Neorenaissance elements. There are 5 windows with shutters at the front and 6 on the side of the building. There are rosettes depicted above the ground floor windows and rhombs under the first floor windows. A white door with simple reliefs, a profiled canopy and a big doorknob lead into an arched interior of the house. Its big rooms, high ceilings, wide doors and stairs give the feeling of openness and connectedness.

In the past, Miklova hiša belonged to family Arko, which developed a trade in the area. In the ground floor they had a bakery and a village inn. The house was well preserved until World War II, but after that, it started to decay.  When an idea for a cultural-tourist centre appeared in 1987, Miklova hiša was the chosen building for it. The main reason was probably because of its location in the town center and its history. The chosen architects Božidar Rot and Staša Blažič, and also the historian Mojca Arh started the renovation in 1989. In the 1990s the gallery and the library moved into the building where they are still today.

The building’s yellowish exterior and white windows give the feeling of warmth, shine, which attracts residents of Ribnica. Plentiful windows give readers and art enthusiasts an ability to read and observe works of art under natural light. Miklova hiša is the physical and spiritual heart of the Ribnica culture. It is a place where people of Ribnica learn about their cultural heritage, get acquainted with artworks of local artists and extend their horizons with reading books.
