Andrej Trobentar: Freedom is not evil-freedom

Andrej Trobentar je vsestranski slikar, pedagog, glasbenik in pesnik, ki je tesno povezan tudi z mestom Kočevje, kjer je v letih od 1982 do 1989 živel in predaval kot likovni učitelj na osnovni šoli ter Gimnaziji in srednji šoli Kočevje. V času poučevanja je na pobudo nekdanjega vodstva SŠTUD Kočevje (Srednje šole tehničnih usmeritev in družboslovja) ustvaril monumentalno delo Svoboda ni zlo/boda, ki se nahaja v prostorih nekdanje srednje šole, danes Gimnazije in srednje šole Kočevje,  na Trgu zbora odposlancev 22 v Kočevju. Naslikana je bila leta 1985.

Sama poslikava se nahaja v avli šole in prikazuje več figur in ikonografskih motivov iz živalskega, rastlinskega, sodobnega in literarnega sveta. Dragica Trobec Zadnik je o zgodbi dela zapisala: »Zgodbo prične v spodnjem, zemeljskem delu slike; zaplet in drama se razvijeta v osrednjem delu s prizorom avtomobila, ki je obtičal na cesti s prižganimi lučmi…. Zgornji del podobe, pa tudi simbolno prikazuje vrh hrepenenja in človeškega hotenja. Lebdeče figure, ki se dvigajo so v procesu vseživljenjskega učenja dozorele, dosegle so končno spoznanje, uresničile svoje poslanstvo. Vse to poudarja temno in pozlačeno steklo v obliki avreole, nekakšnega novodobnega svetniškega sija, ki izpričuje avtorjevo zavezanost doseženemu spoznanju vedenja in samouresničitve.« (Zgibanka: Svoboda ni zlo/boda, 2007) Trobentar je ob izdelavi dela predstavil odlično poznavanje slikarskih veščin, likovne zgodovine in razgledanost na področjih človekovega delovanja, kot je na primer literatura. Ta se odraža v izbranih zgodbah, ki jih je slikar vključil v delo. Najdemo lahko zgodbo Dostojevskega o Dobrem in zlu, ter Biblijsko zgodbo o Jakobovih lestvah, ki jo prepoznamo po lestvah, s katerimi lahko pridemo v nebo. Poslikava vključuje človeške figure različnih oblik, ki predstavljajo sporočilo dela; Svoboda ni zlo/boda. Slika prikazuje, kaj lahko človek doseže, če si upa želeti. Spodnji del slike prikazuje figure ljudi, ki se v obupu in žalosti premikajo po svetu in verjamejo lažem okoli sebe. Medtem ko zgornji del slike predstavlja ravno nasprotno: umirjene figure tu pripovedujejo zgodbo o lepoti, miru, svobodi in ustvarjalnosti. V delo pa je avtor vključil tudi besede, ki jih lahko preberemo na več načinov (svoboda boža, ljuba roža, svoboda ni zlo/boda …). Vse nastale besedne zveze predstavljajo svobodo v najbolj golem pomenu besede, svoboda ni zlobna, ampak nam prinaša lepoto, ljubezen, mir in ustvarjalnost ter zmožnost izražanja najglobjih želj in hotenj. Pomembnost časa je slikar poudaril z belo šolsko uro na sredini, ki je bila tam že pred časom nastanka poslikave. Trobentar se pri slikanju ni ukvarjal z upodobitvijo prostora, ampak je raje pustil, da spregovorijo ploskovite podobe s poudarjenimi linijami in žarečimi barvami.

Tehnika, ki jo je Trobentar uporabil za ustvarjanje, je akril na steni. Poleg akrila, za katerega so že tako značilne žive barve, je kasneje dodal tudi avtorsko oblikovano steklo. Kompozicija je prosta. Opazen je tudi ploskovit morfološki slog.

Trobentar je v delu predstavil svoj pogled na življenje, srečo in zlo v njem. Kaj pa svoboda pomeni za sodobnega človeka? V SSKJ najdemo pod geslom svoboda naslednji zapis: »svoboda je samostalnik, ki opisuje stanje, ko so ljudje podrejeni samo zakonom in ne neomejeni, samovoljni oblasti koga ali pa stanje, ko skupnost, država ni podrejena neomejeni, samovoljni oblasti ali kaki tuji državi ali celo stanje, ko človek lahko izbira, se odloča po lastni volji.« Sama svobodo razlagam s prispodobo metulja, ki se je reši bube in prosto začel leteti po širnem svetu. Svoboda meni, tako kot slikarju, predstavlja stopnjo v življenju, kjer dosežeš vse svoje želje in cilje, čutiš pa samo mir, ljubezen in veselje. Kaj pa zate predstavlja svoboda?

Andrej Trobentar is a versatile painter, teacher, musician and poet, who is closely connected with the city Kočevje, where he lived and lectured as an art teacher in the primary school and  the grammar school Gimnazija in srednja šola Kočevje, between the years 1982 and 1989. During his teaching time, he created the monumental artwork called Svoboda ni zlo/boda (Freedom is not evil-freedom), at the initiative of the former management of SŠTUD Kočevje (Secondary Schools of Technical and Social Sciences Kočevje), which is located at the premises of the former secondary school and today’s grammar school Gimnazija in srednja šola Kočevje at Trg zbora odposlancev 22, in Kočevje. It was painted in 1985.

The painting itself is located in the school lobby and shows several figures and iconographic motifs from the animal, plant, modern and literary worlds. Dragica Trobec Zadnik wrote about the story of the painting: “The story begins at the bottom, earthly part of the painting; complication and drama develop in the central part with the image of the car, which is stuck on the road with its lights switched on… The upper part of the painting symbolically depicts the pinnacle of yearning and human volition. Floating figures, which rise up have in the process of lifelong learning matured, reached final discovery and fulfilled their mission. All of this emphasizes the subject and the gilded glass in the form of an aureola, a kind of modern-age halo, which testifies to the author’s obligation to the achieved knowledge and self-realization.” (Brochure: Svoboda ni zlo/boda, 2007) Trobentar showed impeccable knowledge of painting skills, art history and worldliness in areas of human activity, such as literature. The latter is reflected in the selected stories that the painter included in his artwork. We can recognise Dostoyevsky’s story of Good and Evil, and the Biblical story of Jacob’s ladders, depicted in the ladder with which we can reach heaven. The painting includes human figures of various shapes that represent the massage of the artwork: freedom is not evil-freedom. The painting shows what a person can achieve if they dare to want. The lower part of the painting shows figures of people moving around the world in sadness and despair, believing the lies surrounding them. Meanwhile, the upper part of the painting presents just the opposite: the calm figures tell a story of beauty, peace, freedom and creativity. The author also included phrases in the work, which can be read in different ways (freedom caresses, dear flower, freedom is not evil freedom). All the phrases represent freedom in the most basic sense of the word: freedom is not evil, but it brings us beauty, love, peace, creativity and the ability to express the deepest desires and volition. The painter emphasizes the importance of time with the white clock in the middle, which had existed before the creation of the painting. Trobentar did not focus on depiction of space but rather preferred to let flat images with accentuated lines and glowing colours speak for themselves.

The technique Trobentar used is acrylic on the wall. In addition to acrylic, which is already characterized by vivid colours, he later added personally-designed glass. The composition is simple and a flat morphological style is also noticeable.

In his work, Trobentar presented his view of life, happiness and evil in it. And what is the meaning of freedom for the modern man? In SSKJ (Dictionary of Standard Modern Slovene language) we can find the following explanation of the word freedom: a noun that describes a state in which people are subject only to the law and not to someone’s unlimited, self-willed authority; or a state in which a community, state is not subject to an unlimited, self-willed authority or some foreign country; or even a state in which a man can choose, decide  according to own free will. I interpret the word freedom with the metaphor of a butterfly that gets rid of the cacoon and starts flying freely around the world. Just like the author, I understand the word freedom as a stage in life in which you achieve all your desires and goals, and you only feel peace, love and joy.
